Présentation

Angel Uranga was born in Zarauz, a coastal town in the Basque country of Spain, in 1961. He spent his childhood in the surf of a sea whose horizons, outlined by gray skies and majestic clouds, presented him with unique patterns of light and shadows. He grew up surrounded by mountains, next to an ocean dotted with red and green fishing boats where a tireless breeze blew along a stretch of magnificent sand.

Destiny introduced him to other lands including Switzerland, Catalonia, the Rioja region, and most importantly his wife's homeland of Extremadura in the Southwest of Spain. These experiences explain the variety of voices and chromatics expressed in his paintings. Impressionistic, Expressionistic and touches of Cubist influences appear in his works. From his earliest works alfresco he was interested in utilizing color in order to capture moments of light. Later, at 18, when he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts in Bilbao, he had the opportunity to explore and deepen his pictorial vocation. He wrote a doctoral essay on the incompatibility of mediums and became a pioneer in new techniques utilizing water and oil.

His history is reflected in his paintings: the water of his infancy... the blue-greens and grays... the wind, the clouds, the misty rain over the sea and the grasses. In his later years, the land of his wife, where he encountered yellows, reds and browns and the sun, always brilliant, high in the sky. His themes are everlasting, yet pedestrian. Angel is interested in everyday life, he is the painter, always in search of the eternal moment.
