Pixel Painting

Between tradition and modernity

Definition of PIXEL PAINTING

Sphère - Lou FLORIAN - 2007As any other new word, the terms PIXEL and PAINTING which appear together here are necessary because of the neologism and they need a further explanation. As everybody knows, the word pixel comes from English, which also comes from combining two words: “element” and “picture” where the later literally means “image”. A pixel is, thus an image element.

In computing language, a pixel is the elementary unit of information of an image whether in colour or in black and white. For having a better idea about what a pixel is, we should imagine, just for a moment, a mosaic which is made of little squares of ceramics, similar to those we may admire at the most beautiful and ancient ruins or on the walls of some luxury baths. Every coloured square, in an isolated way, may be compared to a pixel.

A painting evolution :

Acanthe - KABUKI - 2005Painting evolves. Some centuries ago, the oil technique revolutionized the artistic painting. Recently, synthetic pigments gained a place in the painter’s palette and opened the doors to a movement which was going to be known as Impressionism.
Nowadays, a large number of artists and even the most committed supporters of the traditional techniques prefer to work with acrylic colours. Most of them do not seek to change the natural essence of pine or vegetable resin for petrol-based products or the risen varnish of synthetic solutions…
Who may get annoyed for that?

New possibilities for painters:

Ville Fleur - Pierre LAPIPE - 2007The PIXEL PAINTING is an example of evolution which offers new possibilities to the artistic research without impeaching the achievements of past in a richer world of pictorial expressions. The PIXEL PAINTING has naturally joined the large variety of artistic choices for the present painters and, in particular, for those who look for a larger freedom of creation. A painter, such as KABU KIPARIS (also called KABUKI), is a perfect example of how technique may contribute to painting nowadays.

Even though, this new mode of expression uses without complex the techniques offered to contemporary artists, it is also very important to remark that the artist’s updating will no affect in any sense to his/her spontaneity and authenticity. Widely accepted by public, we may find on the PIXEL PAINTING the expression of a new technique full of possibilities which were completely unknown until today and enrich the well-known media such as stretchers, frames or canvas, etc.

This is the biggest difference between the PIXEL PAINTING and the techniques of digital images. We should not confuse any more PIXEL PAINTING and SYNTHESIS IMAGES!

A PIXEL PAINTING piece is, thus a canvas that is painted as the rest. There would not be any difference among the PIXEL PAINTING and the rest of contemporary painting expressions were it not the remarkable refinement of some details never seen till today, or the depth of a palette renewed with modern harmony.

Computer graphics at the service of painting :

Casus Belli - KABUKI - 2006

PIXEL PAINTING may be reduced to a traditional painting by using the modern tools of high technology for its conceptual part. This new mode of expression combines the advantages of a virtual conception that is computer assisted with the secured values of traditional painting. However, PIXEL PAINTING is not reduced to technical innovations only, it is also a map, or if we prefer, a rigorous protocol which seeks to lead technique to a production of original and unique paintings.

Computer graphics, which are the origins of PIXEL PAINTING, make the artist to use a transducer, such a large plotter in order to see his/her work in a tangible medium such as canvas. Otherwise, all his/her efforts would be prisoners of a virtual world that have seen the birth of his/her piece. This technique offers to the artist the freedom of new possibilities, but at the same time, this technique entails new requirements.

In this way, experience has shown us that if the result prevails over the means considerations for more than a century, nothing guarantees to the investor that the piece he/she is going to purchase is original, as it happens with any canvas.

This is the reason why the PIXEL PAINTING guarantee of origin and quality does not only refer to a contemporary mode of expression, but also it guarantees the collector that a PIXEL PAINTING is always and obligatorily a unique and original piece.

The PIXEL PAINTING artist may enjoy an incomparable freedom of expression even if he/she does not master the mysteries of computer design as well as his/her traditional painting skills. We should be aware that a PIXEL PAINTING artist is not only a traditional painter, but also an astute computer graphics designer.

Works coming from two different PIXEL PAINTERS are not expected to be similar in style, since the PIXEL PAINTING is only a useful resource available to artists at present. That is why under the PIXEL PAINTING label, some painters will find the advantages of creating abstract pieces, whereas some others will prefer to make figurative works.

A breath of fresh air for painting:

Neo - KABUKI - 2007Even though the artist has access to any software, regardless the level of his/her skills, he/she will keep the spontaneity of a classic expression. In this way, some have stated that the PIXEL PAINTING will have a major role within the painting of our century. The painter KABU KIPARIS (also called KABUKI), who is know as the group leader of the PIXEL PAINTING, has been able to go beyond the strict academic representation of objects and bring us to a contemplation of the virgin fields of fractal universes in a surprising combination of abstraction and representational art.

Apart from its professional ethics, the PIXEL PAINTING is a mixed technique that gives the largest freedom to the artists who master its mysteries. It is a brand new technique but soon it should also be found in all the registers of rich creativity of all the talents it is made up of. Besides, the new generations are always in motion. Since, those who have been born within the incomparable media of our times, use without any problem the techniques that seem so new for others.

We should be happy as continuation is assured, and as painting is eternal, it will always find new ways and will still amaze us for a long, long time.
