Norma BESSIERES was born July 22, 1964. Although raised in a setting in which painting was adominant influence by an architect father, who painted when he was not working,Norma herself started painting rather late. She likes to say that she wasstoring up resources that came in handy later, after spending time studyinglanguages and tourism, and after the birth of her third child the early 2000.Since that day she has painted continuously. She is always learning andbuilding on the foundation which she acquired with the help of Marie-MadeleineGréard at the Cour Roland and others; she continues the learning processthrough her own research, studying works of Art, following published artcriticism, and by frequent visits to museums and expositions.  Her works were figurative in the beginning, but overtime they have assumed a more contemporary orientation; Norma makes use in herown way of the natural graphic qualities of the zebra and doesn’t try toconceal her particular affection for that animal, whose ‘permanent hesitationbetween black and white’ gives Norma an infinite field for variation. «I think[the zebra] is very ‘couture’, quite trendy, a bit of a troublemaker, an oddpersonality that inspires in more than one way. It belongs to the same family asthe horse, but it is different than its distant cousin, in that no one has evermanaged to tame one. It is capable of observing another animal or a person forhours. Its expression is disturbing but also tender. »  Her latest collection displays her startling creativeabilities, always with the zebra at the center stage, dressed for the occasionin colored robes. This is her personal manner of ‘taming’ the animal and itsgraphic characteristics, by superimposing a rich palette of colors on abi-chromatic universe.  Norma’s ambition is for the spectator to allowhimself to be invaded by the sensory perception she creates within herpaintings in the manner of Vasarely or Mondrian, going far beyond the animalsubject into a creative reflection about living creatures. Norma no longerpaints zebras, but rather a succession of stripes that tend toward abstraction. Norma Bessières has been showing paintings on theprofessional circuit since 2005.   Technique The paintings of Norma Bessières create a stylizedimage of the animal, capturing its sensual gaze in the intimacy of atête-à-tête, impulsively expressing a bursting forth of unexpected colors. Herprecise brush work gives the hairs of the animal’s coat a velour-like qualitywhich satisfies every demand made by a critical eye, and the animal appears tobe about to escape us with one single bound.  Norma Bessières works in oil on canvas or acrylic ona rigid support. Her recent work on plexiglass is part of a developmentprocess, in which she introduces new ideas: transparency in color. The zebrabecomes even more fluid, even more abstract, giving way to a luminous bundle offibers.
